How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT (and Avoid a Fail)

The annual MOT can be a source of stress for many drivers, but it doesn’t have to be. At Brooklands Auto Centre in Wellington, Telford, we carry out MOTs every day - and we’ve seen how a bit of preparation can prevent a failure and save you money. Here’s how to get your vehicle ready before the test.

What’s Checked During the MOT?

The MOT test focuses on the roadworthiness, safety and emissions of your vehicle. While it doesn’t cover the engine or clutch, it does include:

  • Lights and indicators
  • Brakes and tyres
  • Suspension and steering
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
  • Seatbelts and mirrors
  • Exhaust and emissions
  • Number plates and bodywork

Easy Checks to Do Before Your MOT

1. Check Your Lights

  • Inspect all external lights, including headlights, indicators, brake lights and number plate lights.
  • Ask someone to help or reverse up to a wall to check reflections.

2. Inspect Your Tyres

  • Make sure there’s at least 1.6mm of tread across the central ¾ of the tyre.
  • Look for damage like bulges, cuts or uneven wear.

3. Windscreen and Wipers

  • Ensure wipers work properly and don’t smear.
  • Top up screenwash and check for any cracks or chips in the windscreen.

4. Mirrors and Seatbelts

  • Check all mirrors are securely fixed and not cracked.
  • Test that all seatbelts fasten, retract, and are free from fraying or damage.

5. Tidy the Interior

Clear the footwells and boot. A cluttered cabin can prevent the tester from completing the MOT properly, and very dirty vehicles may be refused altogether.

6. Watch for Warning Lights

Dashboard warning lights such as airbag, ABS, or engine management lights will result in a fail. Get them checked before your MOT appointment.
